Why BuildsFirst

Recruitment got AI. It never got a rethink.

AI now screens, ranks and writes job ads faster than ever. But at its core, hiring still works the way it did twenty years ago: a CV goes in, a filter decides, and the real test comes much later, if at all.

We get it. You want to know a candidate's history. But you'll most likely ask them to do a challenge later anyway. So why not start there?

The usual way

CV → Screen → Interviews → Task, at last

Weeks pass before you see what anyone can actually do. Most candidates never hear back.

With BuildsFirst, on day one

Their CVHow they communicateSomething they built

The history, the person and the proof, together from the start.

What we believe

Today's generation needs a way to get started. Online courses are great, but real learning happens by doing.

That makes your hiring process an opportunity. Every challenge you run lets candidates use and experiment with new tools on a real problem. You see fresh ways of thinking. They walk away with something tangible to show for it, and something they can use for their next opportunity if it isn't with you.

Why now

More people than ever feel stuck. They don't know which direction to take, they lack the “right” experience, or they want to change careers. A CV can't show any of that potential.

Get started

A real brief is a way in, with or without the perfect CV.

Find a direction

Some discover a side project worth building. Some discover what they don't enjoy. Both are progress.

Nothing wasted

Every challenge leaves them with work they keep and can show next time.

Our model

A win, a win and a win.

For companies01

Attract agency. Get inspired.

Meet people who take initiative, see new ways of approaching your problems, and make hiring something candidates actually enjoy.

For candidates02

Accomplishment, not a void.

Instead of a CV disappearing into silence, they finish something real, get feedback, and keep what they made.

For society03

A generation that learns by doing.

Every challenge is a small piece of education: new tools, real problems, and the motivation to keep building.

Questions

What should a challenge include?

A realistic problem from your world, written generically. Leave out anything sensitive: no customer data, internal numbers or confidential plans. Keeping it generic protects you, and means candidates can reuse their work later without breaking anything.

Why this model?

The future of work is changing. How someone communicates, how much agency they show, and how fast they learn on the job matter more than a list of past titles. A short challenge shows all three.

How do I assess candidates?

You get a dashboard to scan every candidate quickly: their work, a one-minute video and their CV side by side, with an AI first pass to help you sort. You make every decision, and every candidate receives feedback.

How long does it take candidates?

Around two hours. Long enough to show real thinking, short enough to be fair to people with jobs, studies or families.

Who owns the work candidates submit?

Candidates keep their own work and can show it elsewhere. That's why briefs stay generic. The specifics are set out in our terms.

Hire better, and help a generation get started.
